LOTO Logo 800x600The story of The Love of Three Oranges has been adapted as an opera, a ballet, and a play, but never has it been fodder for a Panto.  The fairy tale’s commedia dell’arte origins lend well to Piccolo’s devised version with music and dancing, magic, and of course physical comedy inspired by mask work.

British Pantomime evolved from commedia when the Italian art form was exported from the continent to London during the 16th century.  Blended with the British tradition of masque, and the 19th century “harlequinade,” Pantomime thrived by retelling fairy tales with a twist.  Commedia scenarios, like folklore and fairy tales of Panto, were oral traditions passed down from troupe to troupe, and relied heavily on improvisatory collaboration.  Though the characters and scenarios remained relatively the same, the dialogue and story telling changed.  In this vein, Piccolo’s Love of Three Oranges cast and creative team have contributed a devised theatre effort to the production, preserving the heart of the story while influencing the characters and narrative with improvisation and physical comedy from both commedia dell’arte and Panto histories.
