Royal Opera’s New Production of CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA/PAGLIACCI Live in US Theaters Beginning Dec. 10

Royal Opera's New Production of CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA/PAGLIACCI Live in US Theaters Beginning Dec. 10 1 Betrayal, lust, love, jealousy and murder abound in The Royal Opera’s pairing of heart- rending classics Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci shown live in US theaters beginning on December 10, 2015. Both operas are conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by Damiano Michieletto.
Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko lead the world-class cast bringing the productions to life. Staged in a village in Southern Italy in the late 20th century where poverty and hypocrisy prevail, strong passions lurk in the dark.
Cavalleria Rusticana is a tragedy of ancient codes and the illicit love of the peasant Turiddu for the married Lola. In a small village where women are objectified and men fight for their pride, the lovers’ betrayal ends in the ultimate duel.
Pagliacci is the story of an acting troupe; the hunchback clown Tonio, the murderous Canio and his adulterous wife Nedda. Taking to the stage in the local community hall, their performance quickly unravels as the imaginary and reality merge together and Canio descends into a jealous rage murdering Nedda in front of the audience. The story is based on a real life crime the composer witnessed as a child. The operas are staged as originally intended by the composers Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Leoncavallo (Pagliacci) as a part of the verismo movement, which looked to reproduce the realities of rustic Italian life.
