Malcolm X College Celebrates Black History Month College

_DSC3504Members of the community are encouraged to visit Malcolm X College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, during the month of February to celebrate Black History Month and attend several free activities open to the public.

Malcolm X College (MXC), located at 1900 W. Van Buren St., Chicago, ushered in Black History Month with a lively opening celebration that included a dance performance by the Najwa Dance Corps, followed by a “call to ancestors and libation” led by MXC sociology professor, Abra Johnson.

“We are proud of the tradition we have set forth at Malcolm X College to celebrate and honor the history, legacy and contributions of African Americans, as well as the contributions of others,” said Dr. Anthony E. Munroe, President.  “After all, we are named in honor of one of the world’s most recognized historical figures – Malcolm X.”

The opening ceremony was hosted by the college’s Cultural Diversity Committee, and is just one of several fantastic events the group has planned to celebrate and honor Black History Month, including:

  • ·       Vendor Market – Starting Monday, Feb.  4 – 17, in the Main Lobby (first floor) from

9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Mon – Fri; 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday; and from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Attendees can purchase clothing, music, videos, jewelry, scented oils, and much more.

  • ·        Steppers Set – Friday, Feb. 22, in the Cultural Center (first floor) from 8 p.m. – Midnight

Attendees can come out and enjoy a night of dancing with their friends.

  • ·       “Crossed,” the stage play – Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Theater.  Doors open at 4:30 p.m.  The play begins at 5 pm.  “Crossed” is a tale of family, friends and healthy decision-making told through the eyes of two recent graduates looking to effectively transition from high school into college.
