The District Stage Company will present Broadway Unplugged, an evening packed with songs from electrifying shows to hit the Great White Way in recent decades, with Broadway stars Rebecca Naomi Jones, Adam Chanler-Berat, Matt Caplan and Andy Señor Jr., under the musical direction of Jared Stein, with special guest Matt Nakoa, for three performances only on Friday, March 29 at 8:30 PM, and Saturday, March 30 at 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM at South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center, 10950 SW 211 Street in Cutler Bay, FL.
“I love living and working in New York City, but it’s always been a dream of mine
to bring Broadway home to Miami. As a result, I founded The District Stage Company last year with other Miami natives working on Broadway,” says District Stage Company’s Artistic Director Andy Señor Jr. “I have developed such rich relationships in the Broadway community over the many years and I’m excited to create events in Miami that feature Broadway talent and turn up the heat in the South Florida Theatre scene.”
Preceding Broadway Unplugged, Florida International University Theatre will be hosting “Inside Scoop,” a talk-back in which these Broadway professionals will discuss career development, their experiences, and offer an insider’s perspective of Broadway. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and invited guests will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from the invited artists. This exclusive event will take place Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 3:30PM at FIU’s Nicole & Herbert Wertheim Performing Arts Center Blackbox Theatre. Call 305-348-2895 to RSVP.
Broadway Unplugged is one of The District Stage Company’s first events in South Florida. Last year they also produced “Broadway Songbook” featuring Janet Dacall (In the Heights) and Henry Gainza (4 Guys Named Jose).
Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show. Parking is free. All performances take place in the intimate Black Box Theater at South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center, with food and drinks available for purchase. Rebecca Naomi Jones has performed on Broadway in American Idiot and Passing Strange, and Off-Broadway in Murder Ballad (Manhattan Theater Club), Wig Out!, This Beautiful City (both at the Vineyard Theatre), Passing Strange (the Public Theater), and How Love Is Spelt (Playwrights Horizons). Regional work includes A Maze (Powerhouse Theater), American Idiot, Passing Strange(both at the Berkeley Rep), and tours of Caroline, Or Change, Little Shop of Horrors and Rent. Adam Chanler-Berat originated the role Henry in Next to Normal and played the role for the entirety of the Broadway run. Most recently, he originated the titular character in Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher and played Mark in the Off-Broadway revival of Rent. Andy Señor Jr. was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He made his professional debut in the Tony Award-winning musical Rent as “Angel,” playing the role on the stages of Broadway, London, Asia, Los Angeles and US National Tours. He studied theatre at Florida International University and the PUBLIC Theatre Shakespeare LAB. Most recently, he was the Associate Director to Michael Greif on the Rent revival Off Broadway and re-staged the production in Tokyo, Japan this past fall. Currently, he is the Assistant Director on Fly, a new musical that will make its premiere at the Dallas Theatre Center in the summer of 2013. He is the Artistic Director of the District Stage Company.
