Washington St., Chicago, IL). Advance purchase tickets are available now at http://wcpacarminaburana.brownpapertickets.org.Under the direction of Artistic Director Paul Caldwell, and in collaboration with David Cerda and Hell In a Handbag Productions, Carmina Burana will be brought to life by the Windy City Performing Arts (WCPA) choirs in a one-of-a-kind production of music, singing, and theatrics that will put a new, unforgettable twist on this timeless classic!
One of the most popular pieces in classical music repertoire, Carmina Burana is full of texts that are as relevant now as when they were when they were written in the 13th century. The piece reverberates with powerful themes about the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return to Spring, and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling, and lust.
Hell In a Handbag Productions is a diverse group of artists, actors, directors, designers, writers, and composers dedicated to the preservation, exploration, and celebration of the art of camp and parody onstage–in the most ridiculous manner possible. As profiled in New City: “Hell in a Handbag’s flamboyant wit and theatrical verve are akin to what the early productions of the late Charles Ludlam’s legendary Ridiculous Theatrical Company productions might have been like.”
Carmina Burana promises to be a memorable, musical, tour de force for the senses. Revel in the colorful glory of this timeless piece with us, and let’s call the whole thing “Orff!”
Celebrating 37 lyrical years, Windy City Performing Arts (WCPA) is Chicago’s premier LGBTQ choral arts organization encompassing Windy City Gay Chorus and Windy City Treble Quire. WCPA celebrates diversity, honors creativity and cultivates pride through the transformative power of music and the arts.
