TONY® Nominated A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL Returns to Hartford, Boston & New York
The producers of A Christmas Story, The Musical, have announced that the three-time Tony® nominated production will return for the holiday season with engagements at the The Bushnell in Hartford, CT (November 12-17) and The Wang Theatre in Boston, MA (November 20 – December 8) before returning to New York at The Theater at Madison Square Garden (December 11 – 29). Tickets are now on sale for the New York engagement. Single tickets for the general public go on sale for the Boston engagement June 16, and for the Hartford engagement on September 9.
“We are thrilled A Christmas Story, The Musical will perform in New York this year,” says producer Gerald Goehring. “A tour was booked, the time frame was tight, and after considering various options we are able to make it work at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden. The winners are audiences who will be able to experience the joy of this magical musical.”
Nominated for three 2013 Tony Awards® including Best Musical, America’s #1 holiday movie came to hilarious life onstage when A Christmas Story, The Musical first launched a tour in 2011, followed by its Broadway debut in 2012. The musical features a bright, nostalgic score by composer/lyricist team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a witty book by Joseph Robinette based on the writings of radio humorist Jean Shepherd and the 1983 film favorite. Tony Award winner John Rando (Urinetown) directs the production with Warren Carlyle (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Chaplin, Follies) choreographing. Casting will soon be announced.
A Christmas Story, The Musical features scenic design by Walt Spangler; costume design by Elizabeth Hope Clancy; lighting design by Howell Binkley; sound design by Ken Travis; wig design by Tom Watson; animal training by Tony Honor recipient for Excellence in Theatre William Berloni; orchestrations by Larry Blank; music supervision by Ian Eisendrath; dance music arrangements by Glen Kelly; vocal arrangements by Justin Paul; and music direction by Ben Whiteley.
In its 2012 engagement, A Christmas Story, The Musical was both a popular and critical success, breaking house records. The Associated Press called A Christmas Story, The Musical “a joyous Christmas miracle,” while The New York Times wrote “I was dazzled. You’d have to have a Grinch-sized heart not feel a smile spreading across your face.” The New York Post wrote “Fans of the movie can breathe easy. … A Christmas Story, The Musical has legs. The charming musical succeeds.” WOR Radio raved “if you’re looking for a holiday show to take the kids to you can skip all the others because this is the best Christmas show I’ve ever been a witness to.” The New York Observer called it “A fantastically good time …the most fun I’ve had at a musical all year,” and NBC4 called it “one of the best times you can have in New York! Run fast and get your tickets!” Time Magazine, The Associated Press and NY1 News have all included A Christmas Story, The Musical on their top-10 list for the best theatre of 2012.
The story from a cherished movie classic that’s enchanted millions is now a musical spectacular. In 1940’s Indiana, a bespectacled boy named Ralphie has a big imagination and one wish for Christmas—a Red Ryder BB Gun. A kooky leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a cranky department store Santa, and a tripledog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the obstacles that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas dream. Co-produced by the film’s original Ralphie, Peter Billingsley, A Christmas Story, The Musical is musical comedy entertainment that captures a simpler time in America with delicious wit and a heart of gold.
A Christmas Story, The Musical is produced by Gerald Goehring, Roy Miller, Michael F. Mitri, Pat Flicker Addiss, Peter Billingsley, Timothy Laczynski, Mariano Tolentino, Louise H. Beard, Michael Filerman, Scott Hart, Alison Eckert, Bob Bartner, Michael Jenkins, Angela Milonas, and Bradford W. Smith.
A Christmas Story, The Musical is based upon the motion picture A Christmas Story © 1983 Turner Entertainment Co., distributed by Warner Bros., written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark, and In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash written by Jean Shepherd. A Christmas Story, The Musical is produced with permission of Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Inc. and Dalfie Entertainment, Inc.
