The Music Box Opens 2012 National Theatre Live Season with the mystery “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”
This fall, the Music Box Theatre again partners with National Theatre Live to exhibit three live stage performances beamed to Chicago fromthe prestigious National Theatre in London. The season begins in October with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Marianne Elliott (War Horse) directs this richly theatrical exploration of Mark Haddon’s beloved, award-winning novel. The one-time Chicago showing takes place Wednesday, October 17, 7 p.m. at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 North Southport Avenue.
Coming up, on Wednesday, November 7, the Music Box will present Stephen Beresford’s new play The Last of the Haussmans, starringJulie Walters and directed by Howard Davies (Les liaisons dangereuses). The play examines the fate of the 1960s revolutionary generation and offers a funny, touching and at times savage portrait of a family full of longing that’s losing its grip. The 2012 NTLive season at Music Box concludes Wednesday, November 28, with Timon of Athens, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Miss Saigon, The History Boys) and starring Simon Russell Beale, hailed as “the greatest stage actor of his generation.” Visit www.musicboxtheatre.com/
When The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time begins, 15-year-old Christopher (Luke Treadaway, left, star of the original production of War Horse) stands beside Mrs. Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, exceptional at math while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world. Simon Stephens’ adaptation offers a richly theatrical exploration of the touching and bleakly humorous, award-winning novel.
