Milwaukee Rep’s RAGTIME Begins SEPTEMBER 21, 2013

RagtimePosterVoted by Time Magazine as among the Top 100 Best Novels of the last century, this sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an African-American couple and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream. Unfolding through the fiery rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, and the vibrant klezmer of the Lower East Side, this vivid and unforgettable Tony-winning score bursts onto the stage “on the wheels of a dream” in what will be the largest and most epic production ever staged at The Rep.

Ragtime will be directed by Artistic Director Mark Clements who begins his fourth season at Milwaukee Repertory Theater and recently renewed his contract for another four years. The epic production will feature a cast of 36 actors and 9 musicians on the Quadracci Powerhouse stage, The Rep’s main stage theater.

The cast for Ragtime includes: Broadway veterans Carmen Cusack, Gavin Gregory and David Hess, Associate Artists Jonathan Gillard Daly and Gerard Neugent, along with frequent Rep guest actor Kelley Faulkner. Returning to The Rep are Melissa Joy Hart, Carl Clemons Hopkins and Beth Mulkerron. Making their Rep debuts are Michael Doherty, Elizabeth Earley, Rachael Ferrera, Jessie Hooker, Josh Landay, Gabriel Mudd,James Patterson, Sam Strasfeld, Bethany Thomas and Steve Watts. The children’s cast for Ragtime includesLuke Brotherhood, Tyler Johnson, Georgina Pink, Samuel Langston Powell, Mallorey Wallace and Deonta Oscar Williams. Ragtime runs in the Quadracci Powerhouse from September 17 – October 27 and opens onSaturday, September 21 at 8:15 p.m. (Please note special date and time for Saturday night opening date.)

The play’s epic story and soaring music provide a rousing vehicle to continue these important community conversations about identity and our own interpretations of the American Dream, as well as the full scope of the human experience. Ragtime is hopefully one of those experiences in the theater that reaffirms the good things that we have in our lives, while reminding us at the same time to continue to fight the fights that we think are worth fighting in order to make our world and our community even stronger places.”

Ragtime Cast

Luke Brotherhood (Little Boy) returns to The Rep after appearing as Percy Smudge in last season’s production of A Christmas Carol, Billy in Assassins and in Rep Lab during the 2011/12 Season. Other credits include It’s a Wonderful Life (Sunset Playhouse) and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (First Stage Children’s Theater). 

Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Booker T. Washington) returns to The Rep after appearing in last season’s hit production Blues in the Night. Regional credits include: Eclectic Society (World Premiere) and My Way(Walnut Street Theatre); Pericles (Georgia Shakespeare); Avenue X, Rent and Little Shop of Horrors (11th Hour Theatre Company); Topdog/Underdog, Orphans and This Is How It Goes (Philadelphia Fringe Festival); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Christmas Dreams (Theater Horizon) and Robin Hood (Arden Theatre Company).

Carmen Cusack (Mother) recently played Dot/Marie in Sunday in the Park with George at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Other theater credits include: Lynn Gardner in Carrie (MCC); Nellie Forbush in Broadway’s Lincoln Center Theater Production of South Pacific (National Tour) and Elphaba in Wicked(Chicago, First National Tour and Melbourne, Australia). Her West End credits include: Kim in Personals and Christine in The Phantom of the Opera.

Jonathan Gillard Daly (Grandfather/J.P. Morgan), a Rep Associate Artist, returns to The Rep after appearing in last season’s productions of Sense and Sensibility, The Diary of Anne Frank and Assassins. Other recent credits include To Kill a Mockingbird, Death of a Salesman and Cabaret. Daly is also a founding member of the Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona, MN and is a 30-year veteran of regional theaters throughout the U.S.

Michael Doherty (Younger Brother) is making his Rep debut with this production. Off-Broadway he appeared in Dublin by Lamplight (59E59/Inis Nua Theatre Company). Regional credits include: Assistance (Wilma Theater); Next to Normal and The History Boys (Arden Theatre Company); Mr. Hart and Mr. Brown andTreasure Island: A Musical Panto (People’s Light and Theatre). He received the 2011 Barrymore Award for Supporting Actor in a Musical for his work in Theatre Horizon’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Elizabeth Earley (Welfare Officer), making her Rep debut, recently finished the First and Second National tours of Mary Poppins and Whistle Down the Wind. Favorite regional credits include Ragtime (The Kennedy Center); A Chorus Line (Merry-Go-Round Playhouse); Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival) and Evita (Sacramento Music Circus.)

Kelley Faulkner (Evelyn Nesbit) was most recently seen at The Rep in The Diary of Anne Frank. Other recent credits include playing Patsy Cline in Always . . . Patsy Cline, Belle/Lucy in A Christmas Carol and Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. Other credits include: Proof (Theatrefest); Oliver! and State Fair (Walnut Street Theatre); Chicago (New Candlelight Theatre) and Give My Regards to Broadway (Kimmel Center) and The Music Man and Street Scene (NYC Opera).

Rachael Ferrera (Harlem Woman/Sarah Understudy/Ensemble), making her Rep debut, has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Town Hall. Recent credits include Lisette in Marie Christine, Maria in West Side Story and Gloria in Boeing Boeing.  

Gavin Gregory (Coalhouse Walker Jr.) is making his Rep debut with Ragtime. Melissa Joy Hart (Emma Goldman) returns to The Rep after having appeared as Emma Goldman in last season’s production of Assassins. Regional credits include Amadeus, Sound of Music, Jacques Brel (Walnut Street Theatre), Into the Woods (Arden Theatre Company), Little Mermaid (Fulton Theatre), Fat Pig (Theatre Horizon) and Musicale Series (Bristol Riverside Theatre).

David Hess (Father) will be making his Rep debut with this production. Broadway credits include Sweeney Todd (Sweeney/Judy Turpin standby) and Annie Get Your Gun (Frank Butler/Buffalo Bill standby). Jessie Hooker (Sarah) will be making her Rep debut with Ragtime. She has appeared Off-Broadway in Sistas the Musical (St. Luke’s Theatre) and in the National Tour of Legally Blonde. Other credits include: Company(Geva Theatre Center); Rent and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (NCCA Papermill Theatre);Something’s Afoot and God’s Favorite (Great Plains Theatre); Ragtime; West Side Story and Hairspray.

Tyler Johnson (Little Boy) will be making his Rep debut with Ragtime. Recent credits include The Thief Lord(First Stage Children’s Theater), Scrooge The Musical (The Fireside Dinner Theatre), Oliver! (UW-Waukesha) and Willie Wonka, Jr. (Christ the Lord Lutheran Church).

Josh Landay (Tateh) will also be making his Rep debut with this production. Broadway credits include: The Lion King. Additional credits include West End, Las Vegas and First National Tour of The Lion King. Regional credits include Hartford Stage, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Theatre Aspen, Prospect Theater Company, Cabaret Cucaracha and Creede Repertory Theatre. In addition, he is a Teaching Artist with The New 42nd Street Inc. as well as a Director, Think Different Diplomats/Lecture Agent with Eye to Eye, a mentoring movement for Different Thinkers speaker’s bureau.

Gabriel Mudd (Matthew Hensen) is also making his Rep debut with this production. Credits include the National Tour of The Wedding Singer – The Musical and A Chorus Line. Other favorite credits include: The Buddy Holly Story, Once on This Island, Smoky Joe’s Café, Aida, Children of Eden and High School Musical. On television he has appeared on Guiding Light. Additional credits include numerous commercials, print, voiceover and recordings 

Beth Mulkerron (Bridgit) is making her Rep debut on the Quadracci Powerhouse stage after having been seen at the Stackner Cabaret in the 2010/11 production of Hula Hoop Sha–Boop. She has performed across the country including Off-Broadway, in concert with Davis Gaines and locally at Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, The Fireside Dinner Theatre and Skylight Music Theatre.

Gerard Neugent (Judge/Policeman #1/Willie Conklin) was most recently seen at The Rep in Clybourne Park, A Christmas Carol and Gutenberg! The Musical! Other recent credits include Othello, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Death of a Salesman, The 39 Steps and Laurel and Hardy. Neugent is a graduate of Marquette University.

 

James Patterson (Henry Ford/Train Conductor/Charles S. Witman) is making his Rep debut with this production. Broadway credits include: Beauty and the Beast and State Fair. National Tours include: MaryPoppins, The Drowsy Chaperone, Beauty and the Beast and Cats. Other credits include: Le Comte Ory(Metropolitan Opera House); Bye Bye Birdie (North Shore Music Theatre) and What A Glorious Feeling(Adirondack Theatre Festival).

 

Georgina Pink (Little Girl) will be returning to The Rep after appearing in the 2011 and 2012 productions of A Christmas Carol. Additional credits include Les Misérables (Skylight Music Theatre) and Peter Pan and Wendy(First Stage Children’s Theater).

Samuel Langston Powell (Coalhouse Walker III) is excited to make his debut at The Rep. Samuel is an active First Grader at Mercy Elementary School with a passion for performing on stage, on the court and in the presence of his family and friends.

Sam Strasfeld (Harry Houdini) is making his Rep debut with this production. Most recently he appeared inHello, Dolly! (Cape Playhouse). Broadway credits include: Scandalous (Charlie Chaplin) and Mary Poppins (Bert standby). National Tours: Mary Poppins and Jersey Boys. Regionally he has appeared in Follies (Ahmanson Theatre and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts). West End: Peggy Sue Got Married

Bethany Thomas (Sarah’s Friend) is making her Rep debut in Ragtime. Credits include: South Pacific (Marriott Lincolnshire); Hairspray (Drury Lane Oakbrook); Hair (Paramount Theater) and Porgy and Bess (Chicago Jeff Nomination). She is a proud member of Actors’ Equity and works for Broadway In Chicago.

Mallorey Wallace (Little Girl) returns to The Rep after having being seen as Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird(2011/12 Season). Recent roles include Louise in Sunday in the Park with George at the Skylight Opera Theatre, Annie in Annie and Gretl in The Sound of Music at The Fireside Dinner Theatre and Junie B in Jingle Bells and Batman Smells at First Stage Children’s Theater.

 

Deonta Oscar Williams (Coalhouse Walker III) recently turned five years old. He is a K5 student and attends Lafollette Elementary School. Also known as P-Nut, he is very excited to appear in Ragtime.

 

Steve Watts (Admiral Peary/Father Understudy), making his Rep debut, New York credits include Macbeth,Hamlet and New York Musical Theatre Festival’s 2009 world premiere of Hurricane. Other credits includeThoroughly Modern Millie, 42nd Street, Damn Yankees, The Music Man and Barefoot in the Park (The Fireside Dinner Theatre).

Joe Boersma (Stanford White) recently worked at Arkansas Shakespeare Theater as Puck in Bottom’s Dreamand as Otecake in Much Ado About Nothing. He also appeared in Reefer Madness as Jack Stone at the Atheneum Theatre. At U of I he also played Moritz in Spring Awakening and Gunner in Misalliance.

Patrick Budde (Harry K. Thaw) is making his Rep debut with Ragtime. Favorite credits include: The Verona Project, The Waa-Mu Show, How To End Poverty in 90 Minutes. . . , Equus and Disco Pigs.

 

Anna Cline (Ensemble) is thrilled to be interning at The Rep! Some of her favorite roles include Logainne inThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Ilona in She Loves Me Not and Natalie in All Shook Up.

Kyle Curry (Ensemble/Fight Choreography) has worked for Virginia Shakespeare Festival, Kentucky Shakespeare, Shakespeare Dallas, Stages Repertory Theatre, Mainstreet Theatre, among several others. Kyle is also a fight choreographer and an Advanced Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors.

Kamille Dawkins (Ensemble) is a native of Kingston, Jamaica and a member of The Rep’s Artistic Intern Ensemble. Previous credits include: Hair, Avenue Q, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and Urinetown: The Musical. 

Elyse Edelman (Ensemble) is delighted to join the Artistic Intern Ensemble at The Rep! Elyse has worked extensively with First Stage Children’s Theater as an actor, educator and as headmaster of their summer academy. Regional theater: Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Educational Tour, Guthrie Theater, Riverside Theatre in the Park, Minnesota Shakespeare Company and People’s Centre Theatre.

Armand BC Fields (Baron’s Assistant) has acted in several shows in Chicago. Some of his most memorable credits include: Trouble In Mind, Home, Woza Albert! F*@#ing Men and You Know It’s True 

Nickclette Izuegbu (Ensemble) is excited to join the Milwaukee Rep family. Recent credits include: Mrs. Dickson in Intimate Apparel and Calliope at the Vortex Theater in Sing Muse. Nickclette was also a member of the ensemble in Zack Scott Theater’s production of Ragtime.

Ron King (Ensemble) has appeared in several productions at Savannah College of Art and Design. In addition, Ron has performed at Forestburgh Playhouse in New York State and has also served as a music director.

Martel Manning (Trolley Conductor) is excited to make his Milwaukee Rep debut! Favorite credits include Vershinin in Three Sisters, Orlando in As You Like It and Belize in Angels in America. 

 

Chris Vizurraga (Ensemble) is a graduate of Shorter College with a BFA in Musical Theatre. Chris has worked professionally with Stone Soup Theatre Project in Chicago.

Sara Zientek (Ensemble) is thrilled to be working with Milwaukee Rep. Companies Sara has worked with include: Center for Applied Theatre, First Stage Children’s Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Optimist Theatre, Uprooted Theatre and Youngblood Theatre. She has also toured with the Utah Shakespeare Festival and The Normal in Schools Foundation.

Mark Clements (Artistic Director/Director) began his tenure as The Rep’s Artistic Director with the 2010/11 Season. An award-winning international director whose work has appeared in over 100 major theaters throughout Europe and the U.S., recent directing projects at The Rep include: Clybourne Park, Assassins,Othello, Next to Normal, Death of a Salesman, Bombshells and Cabaret. Other credits include: Oliver!, Born Yesterday, Great Expectations, Les Misèrables and Of Mice and Men for Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia;The Milliner (Off-Broadway, World Premiere), CSC, New York; My Fair Lady, Copenhagen; The Browning Version at Derby Playhouse and Blunt Speaking at Chichester Festival Theatre U.K/Lucille Lortel Theatre, New York; Speaking in Tongues Roundabout Theatre Company; Speaking in Tongues at Hampstead Theatre, London and Creator/Director of Soul Train, West End, among others. Clements was an Associate Artistic Director for Moving Theatre Company and Associate Director for New End Theatre and New Players Theatre, both in London, Royal Theatre in Northampton and Torch Theatre in Wales. and as Artistic Director of Derby Playhouse in the U.K. from 1992 to 2002. He serves on the National Advisory Board for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at Ten Chimneys. For The Rep’s 2013/14 60th Anniversary Season in addition to directingRagtime, Clements will also direct End of the Rainbow and The History of Invulnerability in the Quadracci Powerhouse.

 

Dan Kazemi (Music Director/Piano Conductor), a Rep Associate Artist, is a composer, actor, music director and educator. He returns to The Rep after having been the Musical Director for recent productions of Blues in the Night, Assassins, Always . . . Patsy Cline, Next to Normal and Cabaret. Kazemi recently orchestrated and musically directed the world premiere musical Tulipomania at the Arden Theatre Company.
Todd Edward Ivins (Scenic Designer), a Rep Associate Artist, tells stories through design and is happy to return to The Rep where he designed the scenery for Clybourne Park, Assassins, Next to Normal and both scenery and costumes for Cabaret and Othello. Regional theater favorites include: Les Misérables (Walnut Street Theatre Company), Into the Woods (5th Avenue Theatre), Oliver, Rent and countless others.

Alexander B. Tecoma (Costume Designer) has been a Draper in The Rep’s Costume Shop for the past 15 seasons. Past designs for The Rep include: Assassins, Always . . . Patsy Cline, Next to Normal, The Andrew Brothers, Lana Mae’s Honky Tonk Laundry, Fully Committed, Shear Madness and several others. Other design credits include: The Tempest (Optimist Theatre) and Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Tour.  

Jeff Nellis (Lighting Designer), also a Rep Associate Artist, has worked on several Milwaukee Rep designs including: Assassins, Othello, Next to Normal, Death of a Salesman, Bombshells and Cabaret. Other designs include Broadway’s Prymate, Off-Broadway’s Tryst (New York Outer Circle Award nomination) and The It Girl.

John Tanner (Sound Designer) is a composer, sound designer and Milwaukee Rep Associate Artist. His music has won numerous awards including: Golden Reel Awards, Telly Awards, Silver Microphone awards and RAC awards for retail advertising. John has also garnered both Gold and Platinum sales certification for his album engineering

Stephen Mear (Choreographer) is best known for his joint choreography with Mathew Bourne on Mary Poppins, a production that ran on Broadway, West End and around the world. West End/Regional credits include: Pajama Game, Kiss Me Kate, Crazy for You, Betty Blue Eyes, She Loves Me and countless others. Stephen also earned Oliver awards for best theater choreography for Me and My Girl, Sweet Charity, Gigi andHello, Dolly!. Mear will be choreographing The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Die Fledermaus this January/February 2014.

Jill Walmsley Zager (Dialect Coach) is very happy to be back at The Rep for the 2013/14 Season. Other Milwaukee Rep credits include: A Raisin In the Sun, Clybourne Park, Sense and Sensibility, A Christmas Carol, The Diary of Anne Frank, Assassins, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lombardi, Yellowman, Ten Chimneys, The 39 Steps, Cabaret and several others.
Henry Lewis II (Assistant Sound Designer) is an acoustical engineer and recognized expert in the field of Electro-Acoustics. He has created several designs for the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, WI, North Star Mohican Casio Resort in Bowler, WI and The Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee. In addition, Lewis is an Active Member of National South Contractors Association, InfoComm and a Full Member of the Audio Engineering Society.

 

AUTHORS

 

Terrence McNally (Playwright) is a four-time Tony Award winner for his plays Love! Valour! Compassion!(Tony Award, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Best Play) and Master Class, along with his musical books for Kiss of the Spiderwoman andRagtime. Recent Broadway credits include: The Ritz and Frankie and Johnny (revivals in the Clair de Lune). Other mentionable accomplishments include two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Rockefeller Grant, a Lucille Lortel Award and a citation from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Terrence McNally has also received numerous OBIE Awards, Off-Broadway’s highest honor.   

Stephen Flaherty (Composer) composes for theater, film and the concert hall. Flaherty has earned recognition and awards for several works. Broadway written scores include: Ragtime (1998 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards); Once on This Island (Olivier Awards for Best Musical, Tony nomination) andSeussical and Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life (original songs). His primary collaborator for over 25 years is the lyricist-librettist Lynn Ahrens.

Lynn Ahrens (Lyricist) has written for the Broadway stage, feature films and network television. In 1998, Ahrens’ lyrical talent earned her several awards including the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the acclaimed Broadway musical Ragtime. Additionally, Ragtime earned Ahrens two Grammy nominations. Ahrens’ also received two Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations and a Gold Record for Twentieth Century Fox’s animated feature film Anastasia. Her primary, longtime collaborator is composer Stephen Flaherty.
