Marriott Theatre’s GYPSY Begins Previews August 23
The mother of all musicals, GYPSY, arrives at the Marriott Theatre this August, previewing Wednesday, August 23, opening August 30 at 7:30 p.m. and closing October 15, 2023. Arthur Laurents’ landmark show is the tale of the ultimate ambitious stage mother, fighting for her daughters’ success while secretly yearning for her own. Exploring the drive, intensity, and tenacity one must have to succeed in show business, this musically thrilling show is directed by Amanda Dehnert with choreography by Stephanie Klemons and musical direction by Jeff Award Winner Ryan T. Nelson.
Trekking across the country, stage mother Rose dreams of the days of her daughter June’s success in the two-bit world of show business. When June elopes, Rose must focus on June’s older sister, Louise, and her unexpected rise to fame in the up and coming world of burlesque. This lavish classic boasts a celebrated score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim including: “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” and “Together Wherever We Go.”
“GYPSY is a tale of perseverance,” said director Amanda Dehnert. “The story revolves around two exceptional women – a mother and daughter – who find themselves living in the shadows of each other’s aspirations. It’s sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and above all else, it has a huge heart. These are the things I love about it, and I’m excited to share this production of GYPSY with audiences.”
The all-star cast of GYPSY is led by Broadway stars Lucia Spina as “Rose” (Broadway: Into the Woods, Kinky Boots, South Pacific, Legally Blonde, Les Misérables, … Spelling Bee), and Nathaniel Stampley as “Herbie” (Broadway: Paradise Square, Cats, The Color Purple, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, The Lion King (Broadway & The West End); Marriott Theatre: Man of La Mancha, The Bridges of Madison County, Ragtime), with Lauren Maria Medina as “Louise” (“Maria” in Marriott’s West Side Story), Tori Heinlein as “June,” J’Kobe Wallace as “Tulsa,” Cedric Young as “Pop,” Emily Rohm as “Tessie Tura,” Leeanna Rubin as “Electra,” Sawyer Smith as “Mazeppa,” Milla Liss as “Young Louise,” and Elin Joy Seiler as “Baby June.” Also featuring Elliot Angsurat, Ben Broughton, Lucian Gutfraynd, Daryn Whitney Harrell, Jordyn Helvie, Christopher Kelley, Kevin Kulp, Mandy Modic, Jojo Nabwangu, Steve O’Connell, Joseph Primes, Laura Savage, Madison Sheward, Ayana Strutz, Arik Vega, and Annie Yokom.
