cyndi_lauper-kinky_boots-2013_tony_awardsKinky Boots, the Cyndi Lauper-Harvey Fierstein musical adaptation of the film of the same name, and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the comedy by Christopher Durang, were respectively named Best Musical and Best Play at the 67th Annual Tony Awards June 9.

Stephen Schwartz's musical Pippin andWho's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, by Edward Albee, were named Best Revival of a Musical and Best Revival of a Play, respectively.

The 67th Annual Tony Awards, which celebrated the best of the 2012-13 Broadway season, were hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and held at Radio City Music Hall.

Kinky Boots was the big winner of the evening, earning six awards — including Best Musical — the most of any production of the season. Its leading actor, Billy Porter, won his first Tony Award for his role as Lola. In an emotional acceptance speech, Porter thanked the musical's creators for “creating the template that allows me to express the journey of forgiveness and acceptance and ultimately a necessary healing for my soul.”

Pippin, directed by Diane Paulus, re-imagined the 1972 musical about the young prince searching for meaning in his life by staging it as taking place within a circus. Paulus collaborated with Gypsy Snider of the Montreal-based circus company Les 7 doigts de la main to create the high-flying show. Pippin won a total of four Tony Awards, including Best Actress in a Leading Role, which went to Patina Miller for the part of Leading Player. Miller said winning the award was “a childhood dream come true.”

Christopher Durang took home a Tony Award for his comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which follows a trio of siblings named after Chekhov characters who are facing the trials of aging. This is Durang's first Tony Award.

The Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was honored for Best Revival of a Play as well as Best Director (Pam MacKinnon) and Best Actor (Tracy Letts). In her acceptance speech, MacKinnon thanked Albee for “giving my career a shape and spine,” and her agent for suggesting she and Albee have lunch 13 years ago.
