(pop. 877), the feisty and precocious Shirley Mae showed signs of a particularly mellow vocal range.  Her early career began with appearances at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.  In 1952, already enrolled in veterinary school, she was encouraged by a friend to audition for replacement chorus roles in the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicalSouth Pacific,” then on Broadway.  Jonesperformance ofThe Best Things in Life are Free,” led an unidentified voice at the back of the theater to remarkThank you Miss Jones,… If you dont mind, Id like to call my partner, Mr. Hammerstein, and ask that he come down and hear you.” Beckoned by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II arrived and Jones became the first and only person put under apersonal managementcontract to the Rodgers & Hammerstein partners.  Less than a year later, Shirley Mae Jones was screen-testing in Hollywood for the super-coveted role of Laurie in the film version ofOklahoma!” (along with the heavyweight likes of Kathryn Grayson, Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell). Many classic films followed includingCarousel,” “The Music Man,” “The Courtship of Eddies Father,” “April Love,” and her Oscar-winning role as Lulu Baines inElmer Gantry.”  Her appearances as the harried head ofThe Partridge Familyintroduced her to new audiences, and she has gone on to perform extensively on Broadway (in productions ofMaggie Flynnand42nd Street,” alongside her son, David Cassidy) in symphonic concerts and as a guest star on many television shows.
The Hollywood Concert Orchestra, an ensemble of 32 of America’s finest musicians, is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the premier musical ensembles in the world. 1. R. Stewart Says:

Thank you for this information, Ms Norby. Always nice to hear about Ms Jones’ performances. You might want to correct your text: David Cassidy is NOT Ms Jones’ son; he is her stepson and co-starred with her in “The Partridge Family”. Ms Jones appeared on Broadway with her son, PATRICK Cassidy.
