Historically both public patrons and the inner-workings of theatre’s most enlightened circles have been quick to define the quintessential New York musical as a celebratory tour-de-force of the city’s heralded landmarks that brim with colorful tunes and upper class sentimentality. Yet in the midst of a nation divided on immigration policy and outsourcing methods, the young composer Lin-Manuel Miranda scrapped the boarder debates and police brutality alarms for a more heartfelt exploration of cultural identity. Arriving at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway over a year ago, the celebratory In the Heights continues to stake its claim as the New York, or rather American, musical reborn; one that unabashedly appreciates the sheer notion of community and willfully scoffs at the cultural debates it can inflame.
