Steppenwolf for Young Adults’ 2012/13 season kicks off with The Book Thief, based on the novel by Markus Zusak, adapted byHeidi Stillmanand directed by Hallie Gordon in Steppenwolf’s Upstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St). Presented as part of the citywide Now Is The Time initiative, and in partnership with Chicago Public Library’s One Book, One Chicago program, The Book Thief features ensemble memberFrancis GuinanwithPatrick Andrews,Amy J. Carle, Rob Fagin, Rae Gray, Dennis William Grimes, Nikki Klix, Ian Knox, Anthony-Jon LeSage, Clancy McCartney, Andy Monson, Mark Ulrich andNicole Wiesner. The Book Thief runs October 16 – November 9, 2012 in Steppenwolf’s Upstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St); the press performance is on October 21 at 3pm. Ravinia's One Score, One Chicago

Based on the Chicago Public Library’s One Book, One Chicago, Ravinia’s One Score, One Chicago endeavors to engage the entire community in a single musical masterpiece. This year’s selection is Holst’s The Planets, selected in recognition of the Solar System’s governing role today as in ancient civilizations, such as the Romans, who named the planets after their gods and goddesses. The work will be performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the women of the Chicago Symphony Chorus at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, under the baton of John Axelrod, on a program that also includes Gabriela Monteroperforming Grieg’s Piano Concerto and improvisations based on suggestions from the audience. In addition to the permanent screens flanking the pavilion stage, the festival will also install a temporary large screen on the north lawn for this show, which features a film accompaniment to The Planets created by astronomer and visual artist José Francisco Salgado. C.O.T. Presents First New Production of Mozart's "Magic Flute" In 17 Years

This September, for the first time in eleven years, Chicago Opera Theater (COT) will present an opera in the fall: a new production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute. This is the first new production of The Magic Flute in Chicago in 17 years, the last being Chicago Opera Theater’s production in 1995 at the Athenaeum Theatre. The opera will feature the Chicago premiere of the English translation byJeremy Sams. The Magic Flute performs at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park on September 15, 19, 21, and 23. Read more
